This is an end-to-end design project, including product design, branding and code. I also explored the relationship between colour and sounds and how we learn, which was published by UX Collective on Medium. Read the article

Specifically designed for an English speaking audience. Implements visual and audible elements to create a multidimensional aspect to learning. By working closely with people from all over Wales, I aimed to resuscitate an ancient language back to its roots and celebrate all parts of the country and its dialects.

An ever decreasing number of people are learning Welsh and currently, only the south Walian dialect is being considered, undermining the roots and history of the rest of the country (which is really important to the Welsh).

By resuscitating an ancient language back to its roots and celebrating it as part of culture I wanted to test this hypothesis - does playfulness help users to get more engaged?

Pretty much all language courses focus on teaching the dialect that is most widely used or most widely accepted in literature. However, while running tests for this product, there was a significant divide between regions in how they speak. For example, someone said that they couldn’t find anything that was north Walian which was putting them off the course. So, to solve that issue I consulted the Welsh from across the country to record their pronunciations and update some of the grammar and words to include south and north Wallian vocabularies.

I started with a mood-board of images and typography throughout ancient Wales and the Celts, to give me an idea on how I can focus this project. The earthy tones and organic Celtic forms have formed a basis of the inspiration.

Set in Manrope typeface, my aim was to convey a sense of legibility while keeping it modern and friendly. This font is a crossover of different font types: it is semi-condensed, semi-rounded, semi-geometric, semi-din, semi-grotesque, so it’s encapsulating a lot of elements, just like the core of this project.

The most interesting thing I found and explored was how to make learning fun. By making things fun and enjoyable with storytelling and interactive elements, those who even weren't planning to learn Welsh wanted to give it a go.
