The Idle Man is a British online menswear retailer, acquired by the Oasis and Warehouse Group in 2019. It initially focused on stocking well-known menswear brands and later developed its own in-house designs, tapping into the growing demand for menswear. I joined The Idle man in 2014 as the fourth member of the team.

My role
My role
I was an all-round designer for The Idle Man. I worked on web templates, working with a little bit of front-end code, e-mail designs, illustrations, logo and packaging designs. I worked in a team with other editors and developers, as well as partnering closely with the co-founders in terms of product vision.

What I did for the website
I lead the layout design of the website for campaings, as well as building new pages. We worked with Magento and I would often parter with a developer to help me achieve and build a specific layout and design.
Illustrations were part of the brand language, bringing in bold simplicity, which was the core ethos of The Idle Man. It was also aimed at a younger audience, which was one of the ways I used illustration to connect with that audience.

The Idle Stylist
The Idle Stylist is a quiz based service that helps the customer with styling by suggesting possible outfits based on the preferences they select. Customers would get signed up within the styling email list and would receive weekly outfits hand-picked by the team, based on their selected preferences. Customers were able to purchase a full outfit with just one click if they wanted. This increased the sales by about 20% at the time.
I build this template from HTML and intergrated within Magento.

The biggest challenge
The biggest challenge
The biggest challenge at The Idle Man was working on a lot of different things in a fast-paced start-up environment. From web to the packaging, it all needed to reflect the same brand style and vision and that took focus as well collaborating with others teams.

Learnings
This was the first start-up I worked at and I really loved the experience. The biggest learnings I took away was how to work in a team effectively. It tought me how to think on my feet and how a start-up functions in general.
